Some fighters are forged through years of training in the gym, digesting instruction and implementing tactics into kinetic energy. Then there is that rare breed of fighter who was simply born to use their body as an instrument in the brutal art of combat. Fort Worth’s Durwyn Lamb falls into this category. Lamb is natural born fighter and those who know the man know that given his blood line there was little doubt as to what profession he would enter.
These days, Lamb is a fight trainer, a damn good one at that, and he holds dear aspirations of being both a professional boxer and MMA fighter. But while Lamb navigates the shark-filled waters of the pro fight game, serving as both trainer and mentor to a cadre of talented young fighters, recognition has been slow to come for his talents as a martial artist.
You see, Lamb has over 25 years of experience in traditional eastern martial arts. The list of his studied disciplines is impressive having trained in the fighting arts of taekwondo, karate, tang-soo-do, aikido, judo, not to mention western boxing. As if learning these martial arts was not enough, Lamb has the fortuitous advantage of being the son and nephew to two of this country’s most accomplished martial artists. Lamb’s father Raymond and Uncle Eric were two of the nation’s most respected martial arts teachers and together they formed the Modern American Karate Academy (MAKA).
This past Saturday, Lamb received his 1st degree black belt under to auspices of West Point Karate Academy and the North Texas League of Marital Arts. The ceremony was filled with all the pomp and circumstance befitting such an accomplishment as Lamb was presented his black belt in American Marital Arts which is a hybrid style designed by his family that encompasses the various disciplines described above. Lamb was presented his belt by none other than Henry D. Suber, who trained under Lamb’s father and uncle. In addition to his black belt, Lamb was also inducted into the North Texas League of Martial Arts, a collection of gyms and martial arts academies designed to grow the reach and relevancy of martial arts here in North Texas.
Durwyn Lamb is a fighter. To know his life’s story is to know of tragedy and triumph in the face of adversity. Saturday night, Lamb was recognized for his tireless pursuit of self fulfillment through the discipline of martial arts. For a man who has dedicated his life to molding fighters, it seems only fitting that his sacrifices became recognized.
