Unlike amateur boxing, amateur MMA is a near identical twin of its professional counterpart. And as much as I love amateur boxing, fight fans cannot, and should not, sleep on the burgeoning amateur MMA scene here in North Texas.
The newest entrant to the world of amateur MMA promotions is Texas Amateur Fighting League (TAFL) who this past Saturday put on of the most energy-filled events to take place in the DFW. Well, actually, not sure if you would count the small town of Alvarado part of the Metroplex, but none the less, a good time was had by all who flocked to the Diamond W Arena. TAFL co-founder Alex Madrid explained to me that there was a ton of forethought was placed in the evening’s matchmaking and the results spoke for themselves as there was never a dull moment inside the cage.
TAFL seems committed to becoming a viable promotional entity here in North Texas, and if you are a fight fan, you owe it to yourself to catch their next show.
NTF Awards (Again, Not Official)

Eddie Grey and Joseph Ferguson enganged in a three round war.
Fight of the Night – Joseph Ferguson vs. Eddie Grey
Those in attendance Saturday night were treated to one helluva opening fight as Ferguson and Grey waged a three round slugfest that had the crowd on their feet throughout the three round affair. Leather was traded with reckless abandon and in the end Grey gutted out the victory. But, truth be told, we were all winners after seeing this war.
Submission of the Night – Aaron Bowman
Aaron Bowman capped off an impressive amateur debut with a picture perfect triangle choke over Alfredo Sarinana.
KO of the Night – Michael Alexander
Alexander seemed to have all of Trophy Club in attendance cheering him on and boy did he not disappoint. Fighting out of Travis Lutter’s gym in Fort Worth, Alexander and Texas Black Belt Academy’s Donnie Bedore put forth a spirited battle but Alexander’s third round TKO was enough to get him the win, and KO of the Night honors from your’s truly.
