cowboy_cage_fighting1It has been almost a year since Cowboys Dance Hall, in San Antonio, had any amateur MMA events and this past Saturday Premier Combat Group made it worth the wait. Non-stop action from beginning to the end all the fights except one was won by a submission, TKO, or KO. Most combatants were making their debut some were honing their fine skills that could one day propel them to the top of the sport.

Alfredo Sariana started off the night with a 2nd round TKO victory, by full mount ground and pound over Ronnie Pace. Lucas Orozco scored the first KO of the night over Anthony Magness; who held a somewhat larger body frame then Orozco. Chris Lopez overcame an early wrestling match against Luis Lerma to win by a ground and pound TKO in the 1st round.

After a lengthy intermission Wallace Mundine brought the crowd to its feet with an armbar submission victory. Mundine looks to be a rising star as his Jiu-jitsu almost won him the fight earlier in the first when he tried for a triangle choke.

A scary moment happened when Elias Garcia threw a vicious right hand that knocked out Jason Petite, when checking on Petite the doctors called for the paramedics. Fighter safety a main concern, it was great to know that Jason was going to be alright.

There were two fight of the night honors the first bout was between Soilo Reyes vs. Alex Melendez, Soilo Reyes paid homage to his Mexican heritage by coming out to mariachi music pumping the predominantly Hispanic crowd. His opponent a former 3 times Golden Gloves champion Alex Melendez came in with a goal to throw gloves and bang. Both fighters came out in the first round strong and swinging for the fences. For a Golden Gloves champ Melendez proved that he has ground skills almost submitting Soilo in a triangle choke. In the second the action was so fast paced and back and forth, the crowd was going nuts clapping and yelling for both fighters. In the third and final round Melendez got Soilo to the ground and was trying to pound out a TKO victory, Soilo was able to counter and apply an armbar for the tap out victory.

The night’s co-main event featured a middleweight battle between Jared Perez vs. Abraham Harrod. The first round started off slow with both fighters feeling each other out, each trying not to make the first mistake. The second round both fighters came out strong with back and forth action; when Jared landed an overhand right he sent Harrod to the floor and started attacking him on the mat earning a TKO victory.

cowboy_cage_fighting2The main event of the night was also the second bout that was considered fight of the night and the only bout to go the distance. Both Cameron Martin and Ernest Cantu came in to the already ruckus crowd only to blow the lid off the roof with their bout. Their standup in the beginning was outstanding; both fighters had their supporters in the crowd making it deafening in the arena. Towards the second round Martin and Cantu went to the ground both were fighting for top position; transitioning over and over neither fighter was able to stay on top for long. In the third and final round fatigue played a factor for both fighters Cantu was able to take Martin down and maintain top control. Martin did everything he could to escape Cantu, but he was over powered and remained on the mat tell the bell rang signaling the end of the fight. All three judges ruled a 30-27 unanimous victory for Ernest Cantu.

A great return for fighting at Cowboys Dance Hall, capped off with a top notch main event. That same night the UFC presented their PPV featuring Mir vs. Cro Cop; in what only can be described as disappointing. Anyone who saw both events can say Cowboys Extreme Cage Fighting gave them their monies worth.
