pacquiao_margarito_faceoffWhen Manny Pacquiao decisively thumped Joshua Clottey over 12 rounds at Cowboys Stadium this past March, the entire promotion was hailed as successful night for the sport of boxing.  Over 50,000 people crammed their way into the home of the Dallas Cowboys to catch a glimpse of the sport’s pound-for-pound king.  With the critical acclaim and financial success of the promotion it was with little doubt that Top Rank, Pacquiao’s promoter, worked with Jerry Jones to stage another event at the billion dollar stadium.

On November 13, Pacquiao will again play to the masses when he battles disgraced, but extremely tough, Antonio Margarito at Cowboys Stadium.  The buzz here in North Texas is tremendous as this fight all but guarantees fireworks.  With the major critisium of Pacquiao’s last fight here in the DFW being the subpar undercard, Top Rank has lined up an intriguing televised undercard featuring some of boxing’s fan favorite pugs.

"In addition to the main event, which we believe is destined to be the Fight of the Year for 2010, we are presenting a tremendous undercard featuring some of the top boxers today,” said Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank stated in a recent press release.  "From top to bottom this will be a sensational card and will keep the viewing audience entertained throughout the evening.”

The night’s headlining televised undercard match will pit former middleweight champion of the world Kelly Pavlik (36-2, 32 KOs) against the iron-chinned Brian Vera (17-5, 11 KOs) of Austin, TX.  With both fighters sharing a penchant for swapping leather, this fight has fun written all over it.  Making things more interesting is the fact that Pavlik needs a win to reestablish the luster that he lost in his last performance; a title loss to Sergio Martinez.

“This is life and death for me as a fighter.  I must win,” said Pavlik.  “The future is now.”

States Vera, "Pavlik’s Cinderella story is going to end for good with me at Cowboys Stadium.  Rust never sleeps – even for a so called man of steel.”

Also featured on the televised portion of the PPV will be two-time Cuban Olympic gold medalist Guillermo Rigondeaux (6-0, 5 KOs) who will take on Panamanian Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2, 23 KOs).

"Guillermo Rigondeaux, perhaps the greatest amateur fighter of this era with two Olympic gold medals, has embarked on a professional career,” said Arum.  “He is taking on Ricardo Cordoba of Panamá. Rigondeaux, whose professional record is just 6-0, has been described by his trainer Ronnie Shields of Houston as the best fighter he has ever trained. Cordoba is a top featherweight who has defeated top fighters including world champion Celestino Caballero.”

The opening televised bout of the night will feature the heralded Philly prospect Mike Jones (22-0, 18 KOs) taking on his toughest fight to date against rugged Mexican Jesus Soto-Karass (24-4-3, 16 KOs).

“This is without a doubt the toughest professional test Mike has ever faced,” said Russell Peltz, Jones promoter.  “Soto-Karass is the right guy at the right time and it’s fortunate that it’s taking place on boxing’s biggest stage.  We have been chasing this fight for one year.  If Mike is going to be a world champion he’s going to have beat Soto-Karass on November 13 to make his case.”

In other undercard news, Oak Cliff’s own Roberto Marroquin will also be featured on the undercard.  There is talk of his fight being televised should time allow.
