hs8p3820As news broke yesterday that Paulie Ayala Productions had canceled their boxing card that was to have taken place this Friday at Pequeno Mexico in Fort Worth, many wondered what exactly was the cause of the cancelation.  This morning, Paulie Ayala himself reached out to us here at North Texas Fisticuffs to set the record straight and explain his reason for pulling the plug on card.

“When your main-event, and your main ticket seller [are forced to pull out of the fight] from whatever issues that may happen, you have to think about the sponsors and the fans,” Ayala explained of his reason to cancel the fight.

Without a doubt, Ayala is North Texas’ elder statesman in regards to boxing and the former world champion assured that from a business standpoint, pulling the plug on the fight was best thing to do.

“I’m not in this to cancel fights,” Ayala explained, remorse clearly evident in his voice.

Ayala has always had the will of a champion; if you ever witnessed any of his fights you know this to be true.  In speaking with him on the future prospects of his young upstart promotional company, Ayala’s spirits seem to brighten.

“It’s good, I’m excited,” states Ayala.  “We’ve got some good fighters we’re trying to push.”

With this fight card scraped, Ayala is looking toward giving fight fans a truly special night of fights during this year’s Super Bowl week in DFW.  Ayala promises that the time spent preparing the card will serve fight fans in North Texas, and visitors for the Super Bowl well.

Ayala views his promotional company as a sort of conduit for talented North Texas fighters to get a shot at the big time promoters, like Top Rank.  It’s why he has never wavered on his dedication to the local fight scene, be it amateurs or professional fighters.  While dipping his toe in the always maddening world of boxing promotions may leave Ayala questioning his own sanity at times, his love and devotion to the sport are commendable.  Even in light of this recent set back, Ayala keeps on fighting, after all, that’s what fighters - even retired ones - do.
